Location

Considering the location of the university is a primary step when looking for admissions. Students usually prefer colleges established in metro cities as it gives more exposure to them. Apart from that, these cities provide excellent opportunities for young students in terms of jobs and careers.

The geographical location of the NLU plays a vital role in deciding the preference list as it is about five years of your life, and it is crucial to make an informed decision. Some students take loans and have to take care of their personal expenses, which are obviously higher in developed cities; some prefer colleges closer to their hometown or do not wish to move out to a different part of the country. Hence, students must consider every aspect thoroughly and then make any decision.

Establishment of the University

Another factor considered before choosing the college is the establishment year of the university. Generally, the students choose well-established colleges over new ones due to various reasons. It is easier to gather information about the universities that have been functioning for a sufficient number of years because you can find out about their curriculum, placement records, academics, rankings and other facilities. With new colleges, not much information can be gathered about their performance and credibility.

Moreover, the older the university, the larger is the alumni base, which provides a better chance of networking to the students. Most of the things can be figured out about a college by looking at its past records.

Job Opportunities

Students must consider the previous placement records of the college before deciding to enroll in it. Find out the type of companies visiting the college for the placement drives as it is important that the university has tie-ups with some top MNCs for better placement offers.

Also, most students prefer the NLUs located in big cities as they have a good number of law firms which will provide a great opportunity for the students to complete multiple internships during their undergraduate law course.

Specialization You Would Choose

Students must have clarity regarding the specialization they wish to pursue while choosing their preference of NLUs. For example, if you want to pursue corporate law, you must choose the high-ranked NLUs like WB National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJs), National Law School of India University (NLSIU), National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), etc. Similarly, if you want to go for litigation, you can enrol in universities like Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University (RMLNLU), Chanakya National Law University (CNLU Patna), or Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU).

Placement Record

The placement record is probably the deciding factor while choosing the preference list of NLUs. The universities with excellent placement records are obviously the top preferences of the students. Those who have successfully maintained outstanding records over the years establishment are the most sought after colleges for the students who wish to pursue jobs in MNCs.

Students who are inclined towards the judiciary may not emphasize much on this factor because job is not their priority. Hence, candidates must find out the placement records of each NLU, the average package offered, the type of companies visiting the campus, the total no. of companies visiting every year, tie-ups of the colleges with MNCs, etc.

NIRF Ranking

The National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) releases a list every year after evaluating the colleges on various parameters. Therefore, it is a decision to refer to NIRF ranking of the NLUs before filling out the preference list. The list of the top NLUs along with their respective NIRF ranking is given below:
