Indian COVID Crisis: A bizarre situation

SARS-COV-2, popularly known as Covid-19, has been affecting our lives for a long time now. It forced the largest democracy to go under a complete lockdown and the largest economy to suffer huge economic losses. Indian COVID crisis is now to be taken very seriously.

When this Indian COVID crisis started, the world was in confusion, but India controlled it by applying a nationwide lockdown. Despite its large population, India’s efforts and control over this catastrophe were praised by many countries.

If everything was going so smoothly, what happened in this short period of time that the situation got completely out of hand?

In my view, there are a lot of things that are responsible for the current situation –

  • People took the pandemic too lightly, the social distancing was ignored, and everyone was on the streets since the day lockdown restrictions were removed.
  • Elections were held in West Bengal despite the current situation in the state when even the government knew the cases were rising dramatically. It resulted in a situation where one in every two people is being tested positive.
  • Many of the private hospitals are not admitting patients due to a shortage of oxygen cylinders, and doctors are helpless. People are dying in hospital car parks, on hospital beds and on roads. The situation is horrific.

To summarize the situation, the world is in danger, and most people are thinking of their own benefits. Despite the crisis, the kids are playing in the playground, and the politicians are busy playing politics, and the black marketeers are playing with everyone’s life.

Many countries have proposed to support India in this unprecedented situation, as our Foreign Secretary, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, said. India is looking at procuring 400,000 units of Remdesivir medicine from Egypt besides exploring to get it from countries like the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan. Shringla said two special aircraft carrying large amounts of medical supplies from the US are expected to reach India. As India battles a devastating second wave of coronavirus pandemic, countries around the world have announced sending medical supplies to help it tide over the situation.

These incidents restore the lost faith in humanity to an extent. People are trying their best to help each other through social media, and these platforms have helped people to a great extent when the government has failed miserably.

Vaccines are showing great results in India; the ICMR chief said that out of the around 11 million people who were administered Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, at least 4,208 were found to be infected after the first dose, and 695 contracted the covid-19 after receiving the second dose, which is quite impressive.

So, if we want to defeat this virus, the only alternative possible is to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Together we can sail through this with the help of vaccination.
