How to Encourage Your Child After they have Failed in the CLAT/NLAT Exam

Handling failures can be a very daunting and challenging task for children, especially when it is something that they have been preparing for months. If your child had been preparing for the CLAT exam for a long time but failed to ace it, it is crucial to handle them with a lot of care so that they do not lose hope. If not handled correctly, your child might get disappointed and start fearing failures to an extent where he or she would even stop trying for anything challenging.

However, it would be best if you can make your child understand that life is all about ups and downs, and no day will be the same. Here are some tips that can help you boost your child’s motivation and help them stand back taller than ever and face all the challenges in their life with a smile on their face.

Talk to them

You must have a conversation with your child and make them open up about how they are feeling. The more they talk about it, the lighter they will feel. Listen to them and let them pour their heart out. Provide them with a comfortable and trustworthy space to talk about how they are feeling without scolding or judging them.

Offer your Support

Your child may admit it or not, but they do need your support during these challenging times. Thus, reach out to your child and assure them that you are by their side no matter what the situation is. Also, do not just ask them to forget about their failures, cheer up and move on, rather support them in identifying what went wrong and how they can rectify it the next time.

Do not scold them or accuse them of not trying hard enough

The last thing you would want to do when your child is already going through the trauma of failure is scolding or accusing them of failing. You must understand that your child is going through a rough time, and doing this would only scar them mentally. If you scold or accuse your child of their failures, they might end up not even trying out for new things.

Realign your expectations

Most of the time, parents put the burden of their expectations on children, due to which they suffer from performance pressure. This pressure leads them to depression and anxiety, which is the last thing you would want your child to experience. It is natural to have some expectations from your child, but you must not pressure them to fulfil each one of them.

Prevent your child from feeling depressed

Believe it or not, but children always strive to make their parents feel happy. They have a strong desire to make their parents feel proud. However, when they fail in something, they feel like they have disappointed their parents; this is when you need to lift their spirits and tell your child that you are not disappointed in them. It would help them in cheering up and not going into the trap of depression.

Do not compare your child to anyone else

NEVER compare the result of your child with that of his friends, neighbours, or family. It would break a child’s self-confidence and make them feel inferior. Not just that, but it can be very demoralizing for your child, especially when your child is already fighting with a failure. It can lead to your child feeling alone and frustrated.

Help your child in analysing their strengths and weaknesses

The next step after you have managed to handle your child is to plan for the next attempt.  Talk to them and help them in identifying their strong and weak points. Advise them on how they can take advantage of their strengths to score better and discuss what changes they need to make in their strategies to tackle their weaknesses better.

Don’t take your child’s failure personally

Lastly, do not take your child’s failure personally. It is not your fault. Some parents tend to blame themselves for their child’s loss. Be assured that your child failing in an event is neither your child’s fault nor yours. Failures and Successes are a part of life and just a matter of circumstances. Do not lose hope, and prepare well for the next challenge.
