RJS Topper Hiten Joshi Interview
LPJ: Hiten, you started your journey with us through CLAT. After CLAT, how did you decide to pursue the judiciary, as many prefer entering the corporate world?
Hiten: I was clear that I wanted to study law from a reputable institute. During my 4th and 5th years, I interned at corporate firms but eventually shifted my focus to the judiciary, inspired by my family’s judiciary background.
I began preparing for RJS Exam in my final years. Although I didn’t clear the interview last time, I stayed motivated. Initially, the law seemed complicated, but studying under your guidance made it approachable. My interest in law truly began with CLAT, and I am grateful to you, Sagar Sir, and the entire Law Prep Tutorial team.
LPJ: Most candidates divide their preparation into prelims, mains, and interviews. How did you plan your preparation?
Hiten: I kept my preparation holistic, focusing on all three phases—prelims, mains, and interviews—simultaneously. My approach was straightforward: prepare for mains, as it automatically covers prelims. Law Prep’s support was invaluable in this process.
LPJ: How did you handle the pressure after clearing each phase of the exam?
Hiten: After clearing prelims, the congratulatory messages brought some pressure. However, patience, self-confidence, and determination helped me navigate through.
I stayed positive, even after the mains, and scored the highest marks in English among selected candidates, despite unexpected questions.
LPJ: Tell us more about your interview. What questions were asked, and how did you handle them?
Hiten: My interview focused heavily on Constitutional Law, my specialization in both LLB and LLM. About 80% of the questions were from this area.
I answered confidently, even admitting when I didn’t know the answer. It’s crucial to handle interviews with confidence and honesty.
LPJ: Were there any questions you couldn’t answer?
Hiten: Yes. I couldn’t recall the answers to two case law questions and one problem-based question on the NI Act. I calmly admitted this during the interview, as the focus is on personality and confidence, not just knowledge.
LPJ: Did you expect to secure such a good rank?
Hiten: No, I didn’t expect such a good rank or the highest marks in English. My family and I were pleasantly surprised by the results.
LPJ: Some candidates prepare for other exams along with RJS. What’s your advice on this?
Hiten: It’s feasible to target 2-3 state judiciary exams simultaneously, like RJS, MP, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, and Haryana, as their syllabus is similar. This approach keeps you engaged and increases your chances of success.
LPJ: What was your daily exam preparation schedule?
Hiten: I focused on mains throughout, covering subjects like the Constitution thoroughly and practicing MCQs for prelims in the afternoon. Discussions with friends in the evening helped clarify concepts. Patience is key since the exam process can take 1-1.5 years.
LPJ: What are your hobbies?
Hiten: I enjoy playing badminton and table tennis, spending time with friends, and watching movies. While not very active on social media, I maintained a balance between RJS preparation and relaxation, which is crucial for staying motivated in this long journey.
LPJ: How did your preparation strategy differ between your previous and current attempts?
Hiten: In my first attempt, I didn’t focus enough on mains. This time, I concentrated on answer writing, knowing that mains and interview marks determine the final merit. I also benefited greatly from LPT’s Test Series, which covered around 90% of the actual exam questions.
LPJ: Apart from Law Prep, who would you credit for your success?
Hiten: My family and friends played a significant role. Their constant support and motivation kept me going, and I am grateful for their belief in me.
