CLAT Preparation Tips by Aadya Singh, CLAT 2020 Topper
If you are someone doing CLAT preparation and want to ace the exam, this will definitely be valuable for you.
Preparing for CLAT in Class 12th
Aadya Singh had first thought about pursuing a career in law when she was in Class 10th. She started preparing for the CLAT exam during Class 12th. Of course, it was challenging to make a balance between board exams and law entrance preparation. But if you follow a strategy and give your time and hard work, you can score well in both exams.
“I had started the CLAT preparation right from the beginning of Class 12th. I used to give equal importance and time to school exams and CLAT preparation. When it was time for board exams, I shifted my focus to school books.”
says Aadya.
She believes that the CLAT exam was vital because she wanted to study in the best law college for graduation. Once she was done with the boards, she dedicated all her time to law entrance exam preparation. She admits it was challenging for her to make a balance between boards and CLAT preparation books, but the amount of hard work and time she devoted was worth it.

Number of Daily Study Hours
Aadya says that she studied for 7 to 8 hours when the school exams were not near. On average, she gave 4 to 5 hours daily during her class 12th to prepare for CLAT.
Once the board exams were over, she found more time to study for the law entrance exam. She studied nearly 14 to 17 hours daily. This was too much hard work and dedication, which eventually paid off.
Moreover, the CLAT 2020 was postponed because of the COVID-19 outbreak and the CLAT exam pattern was changed. This was a tough time for law aspirants. They were disheartened and stressed.
However, Aadya saw opportunities in obstacles. She kept herself motivated and positive.
“Now, I have more time to prepare for the exam,”
is what she told herself.

Role of Mentors
Aadya believes that everyone must have a mentor in their life with whom one can share his strengths, weaknesses, talk about challenges, etc. The mentor can be anyone- a friend, teacher, or a guardian who can listen and motivate us.
“Having a mentor is crucial for success in competitive exams like CLAT.”
Subject-Wise Planning & Strategy
The exam consists of five sections:
- English Language
- Current Affairs, including General Knowledge
- Legal Reasoning
- Logical Reasoning
- Quantitative Techniques
Each section tests different skills, so understanding the weightage and type of questions asked in each is crucial.
For English, CLAT topper Aadya Singh worked on improving her comprehension skills and vocabulary. She read newspapers daily for it.
“Reading speed is an essential skill to score good marks in English. You need to read fast, consume the words and context, and make your reading effective enough to get everything in one go. To improve these aspects, I read The Hindu and Indian Express newspapers on a daily basis. While reading, I was more inclined to the editorial section and national & international news.”
She found newspapers a great resource not only for English improvement, but also for legal knowledge and current affairs. For vocabulary, grammar, and language, she referred to online materials.
“Logical reasoning is all about practice. I worked on my critical skills, learned detailed concepts, assumptions, and conclusions about several topics in detail. I believe there is no shortcut for this. Additionally, I watched YouTube videos of LawPrep Tutorial to prepare for logical reasoning.”

Creating Notes
Along with what was taught in her law entrance coaching, she also searched the topics on Google. She used to read distinct types of content about a particular topic to get in-depth information. She would then create the notes to keep them handy for study and revision.

Role of CLAT Mock Tests
Mock tests play an essential role in cracking the law entrance exam. Without it, you can’t test your level of preparation.
